Matero, Lusaka – A desperate appeal for assistance has been made by a resident of Matero Constituency, whose home was severely damaged by the recent heavy rains, leaving the family’s security at risk.
The woman, 63-year-old Abesta Mwiinga, a single parent and owner of the house, has been living in a precarious situation, with a severely damaged side wall since the devastating downpour on January 29, 2025. The house, which is home to eight family members, including Mrs. Mwiinga, has been rendered uninhabitable, with water seeping in and threatening to collapse the remaining structure.
Despite reaching out to local leadership for support, Mrs. Mwiinga said she has not received any assistance, prompting her to appeal to the wider community for help. The family is currently struggling to make ends meet, with limited resources and no clear means of repairing their home.
The family’s plight has also caught the attention of senior residents in Desai Compound, who are pleading for fast assistance.
“We are really worried about the safety of this family, especially if the rains continue to pour,” said Mr. John Mulenga, a retired teacher and senior resident of Desai Compound. “We urge anyone who can provide assistance to please come forward and help this family in need. Time is of the essence, and we cannot afford to wait any longer.”
“It’s been extremely difficult for the family to sleep in a house with a damaged wall, especially during the rainy season,” said Mrs. Mwamba, a resident of Desai Compound. “The situation has left them in a state of distress, and we fear for their safety.”
Mr. Phiri, another concerned resident of Desai Compound, echoed similar sentiments, “I am deeply concerned about the well-being of Mrs. Mwiinga and her family. The situation is dire, and needs a quick response to prevent any further distress.”
As the situation grows increasingly dire, urgent intervention is crucial to provide Mrs. Mwiinga and her family with the necessary support, safeguard their well-being, and avert a looming catastrophe.
