Muriel Mwansa Mwamba, the iconic award-winnig Zambian songstress, is a trailblazer in every sense of the word. With a career spanning over three decades, she has mesmerized audiences with her soulful voice, captivating stage presence, and unwavering dedication to her craft. As a pioneering female artist in Zambia’s music industry, Muriel has paved the way for future generations of musicians, inspiring them with her resilience, passion, and creativity.

In a candid and heart-to-heart conversation, Muriel grants our publication an exclusive interview, delving into the highs and lows of her remarkable musical journey, sharing the inspirations that have shaped her artistry, and offering a glimpse into the creative process behind her latest album, the highly anticipated “Lesa Alomfwa” to mean ‘God Listens’.

Born into a family of music lovers, Muriel’s childhood was filled with the sounds of jazz, rock and roll, and country music. Her father, a diplomat, had a vast collection of records, which exposed her to various genres. “My childhood was remarkably ordinary, yet incredibly rich in musical influences,” she says in a nostalgic tone, remembering.

“My parents, particularly my father, had a deep passion for music. I vividly remember our home being filled with the sounds of various genres, thanks to my father’s extensive record collection. As a diplomat, he had a subscription to the Columbia House Records (CBS) club, which provided him with a steady stream of new releases every month. This treasure trove of music was scattered throughout our home, with turntables in every room playing a diverse range of genres – from jazz to rock and roll, and even country. My siblings and I would often find ourselves immersed in different musical worlds, depending on which room we were in. It was a magical experience, and it shaped my love for music.”

Muriel’s musical odyssey commenced with her participation in girl groups, where she developed a profound appreciation for harmonious vocals. Citing esteemed ensembles such as the Three Degrees as formative influences, Muriel’s early musical explorations laid the groundwork for her subsequent artistic growth. A pivotal moment in her development as an artist came with her discovery of Carole King’s seminal album “Tapestry”, which had a lasting impact on her creative trajectory. “That album was a huge influence on me,” Muriel acknowledges. “It inspired me to pursue songwriting and production, ultimately fueling my ambition to create and produce my own music.”

With a career spanning over three decades, Muriel has faced numerous challenges, including setbacks and disappointments. Despite these obstacles, she has persevered, driven by her faith and determination. “While I’ve spent over 30 years in the music industry, I wouldn’t say I’ve been actively performing for that entire duration. In reality, I’ve only had the privilege of performing for about 5-6 years. The rest of that time was spent navigating the challenges of survival and overcoming obstacles, both man-made and spiritually inspired. Despite facing seemingly insurmountable odds, I’m humbled to say that God has graciously allowed me to share my music with esteemed audiences, including Presidents and Royalty.”

Muriel’s music is deeply rooted in Afrobeat and Zambian culture. Her heritage influences her sound and style, drawing from traditional rhythms and instrumentation. “My music is a reflection of my identity and culture,” she explains. “I want to share Zambia’s rich musical heritage with the world.”

When asked about her inspirations, Muriel cites legendary Zambian artists like PK Chishala, Laban Kalunga, and Alick Nkata. Internationally, she draws inspiration from iconic singers like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Ella Fitzgerald. “Internationally, I draw inspiration from a plethora of legendary artists, including the incomparable Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Ella Fitzgerald, and Barbara Streisand, to name a few. These exceptional vocalists continue to be a source of learning and growth for me. Additionally, I have always been in awe of the genius of Barry White and Stevie Wonder, whose mastery of musical arrangement is truly phenomenal.”

Muriel’s latest album, “Lesa Alomfwa”, is a testament to her unique sound and style. Featuring a mix of traditional Afrobeat rhythms and contemporary arrangements, the album showcases her creative genius. But what inspired the title of this remarkable album? Muriel shares a remarkable story: “I used to attend Times Square Church in Manhattan, and some women suggested I title my Album after GOD. This was in 2000 and I did. I believe Satan didn’t like it! From that moment all hell broke loose. I went through many, many setbacks. But GOD is always in control…and here we are giving Him glory. The album “Lesa Alomfwa” is out. I can proudly say this  album is more than just a collection of songs – it’s a testament to my faith and perseverance.”

A notable highlight of Muriel’s album is the song “Twamupepa Lesa”, which was co-written with her father. When asked about their collaboration, Muriel’s eyes light up with fond memories. “My father loved music,” she begins. “He had a great voice and could play guitar. He was a closet musician, and initially, he was hesitant about me pursuing a career in music due to the industry’s challenges and conflicting values with our Christian faith.”

However, after her mother’s passing, her father took on a more supportive role, and their collaboration on “Twamupepa Lesa” was born. “He wrote this beautiful song, and I had the music done and arranged in New York City. It was an amazing collaboration, and I’m so grateful to have had that experience with him.” Muriel’s voice cracks with emotion as she recalls playing the song at her father’s funeral. “I miss him very much,” she says, “but I know his legacy lives on through my music.”

Muriel’s mother has also had a profound impact on her life and music career. When asked about her mother’s influence, Muriel’s voice fills with emotion. “It’s hard to express the impact my mother has had on my life,” she says. “It would take a whole book! Without her faith and belief, there would have been no music career for me. She had vision and saw beforehand what I am finally heading towards, even before she passed away tragically in a car accident.”

Muriel’s Facebook post celebrating her mother’s heavenly birthday was a touching tribute to her mother. In the song “Mama”, Muriel pays homage to her mother’s strength and legacy. “I keep my mother’s memory alive through my music by never, never giving up!” she declares. “She abhorred weakness. Her spirit is with me, that one, I know. She’s been with me through my darkest hours.”

Additionally, she has been a guest on Radio Phoenix Zambia, where she shared her insights and experiences with listeners.

As Muriel Mwansa Mwamba’s star continues to shine brightly, her legacy as a music icon remains forever etched in the annals of history. Her unwavering passion, unrelenting drive, and undeniable talent have left an indelible mark on the music world, inspiring generations to come. Her latest masterpiece, “Lesa Alomfwa”, a sublime fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds, is a testament to her innovative spirit and artistic growth, cementing her position as one of Zambia’s most celebrated and enduring musical treasures, revered by fans globally.
