LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – A group of 65 women beneficiaries of the Gabriel Kaoma Foundation’s zero-interest revolving empowerment loans have praised the initiative, describing it as a “game-changer” in their entrepreneurship journey.
The women, who operate businesses in Northmead market and other locations, recently visited Gabriel Kaoma, affectionately known as ‘Mungeli’, at his residence to express their gratitude and welcome him back from a 7-day sabbatical leave in South Africa.

Speaking on behalf of the women, Mrs. Mary Mulusa, a marketeer, thanked Kaoma for the initiative, saying it has had a profound impact on their businesses.
“The loans have added great change in terms of boosting our businesses,” she said. “As a beneficiary and mother, I encourage you my son to continue to have a heart for the people.”

Prior to receiving the loans, the women were operating small-scale businesses, selling limited products. However, with the support of the Gabriel Kaoma Foundation, they have been able to expand their operations, open new shops, and diversify their inventory.

One beneficiary, Sarah Tembo, a 35-year-old widow, struggled to make ends meet, running a small fruit and vegetable business. But with the support of the Gabriel Kaoma Foundation, she was able to expand her operations and diversify her products. Today, she has transformed her business, adding dry kapenta to her inventory, which has become a huge hit with her customers.

“I used my loan to expand my business and now I am able to take care of my family, pay bills, and still remain with something to keep the business running,” she said, beaming with pride.
Another beneficiary has opened not one, but two salon shops, equipped with new and modern equipment, thanks to the zero-interest empowerment loans. “I am thrilled to have been given this opportunity,” she said.

A third beneficiary, who runs a retail clothing shop selling second-hand clothes, has seen her business flourish, expanding her inventory and customer base. “The loan has been a game-changer for me,” she said.
The zero-interest revolving empowerment loans have enabled the women to not only expand their businesses but also create a sense of community, with beneficiaries repaying their loans on time to allow others to access the funds.

In an interview, Gabriel Kaoma, who is also an aspiring councilor for Silwizya Ward 13 in the Lusaka Central Constituency, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting women entrepreneurs. “We are committed to continuing this program, which has made a tangible difference in the lives of many women,” he said.
He thanked the women for visiting him at his residence to express their gratitude and welcome him back from his sabbatical leave, saying it was a humbling experience to see the impact of the foundation’s work on their lives.

“I’m grateful to see how the zero-interest loans have empowered you to grow your businesses and support your families,” he added.
Kaoma also congratulated the women for keeping their promises and repaying their loans on time, allowing the foundation to extend support to more women in need.

The Gabriel Kaoma Foundation has disbursed over K250,000 in zero-interest loans, benefiting over 200 women. The foundation plans to expand the initiative to other parts of Zambia, targeting 500 women by next year.

The foundation’s initiatives address pressing needs and improve the quality of life for residents. Notable achievements include donating a Canter truck for free garbage collection, providing tents for funerals, and installing a new water pump at Northmead market.
