The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), a newly formed opposition political party, has unveiled its plan to subsidize fuel and electricity. Party President Antonio Mwanza recently announced the plan, emphasizing that the subsidies are crucial for reducing the cost of living and boosting economic growth.
According to Mwanza, high fuel and electricity prices have created significant challenges for Zambia’s economy. “High fuel and electricity prices have increased the cost of goods and services, reduced business competitiveness, and decreased disposable income,” he said.
The DPP president acknowledged that critics have argued that Zambia lacks the financial resources to implement such subsidies. However, Mwanza countered that Zambia is rich in natural resources, which can be leveraged to fund subsidies. “Zambia is one of the richest countries in terms of natural resources. We have abundant natural resources, including gold, copper, sugelite, cobalt, mukula, rosewood, emeralds, arable land, water, and a young and educated population,” Mr. Mwanza said.
The DPP’s plan to subsidize fuel and electricity has been welcomed by many, who see it as a move that will reduce the cost of living and boost economic growth. However, critics have argued that Zambia lacks the financial resources to implement such subsidies. But Mr. Mwanza is adamant that with proper management of the country’s resources, Zambia can afford to subsidize fuel and electricity. “Our problem as a country is a leadership problem, not a money problem. This country is rich, and it is unacceptable for our people to be suffering in the manner they are,” Mr. Mwanza said.
Meanwhile, while featuring on 5 Fm radio, the burning issue program, Mr. Mwanza revealed that the DPP will not participate in any elections in 2025, focusing instead on mobilizing membership in readiness for the 2026 general elections. He said this strategic move is aimed at building a strong foundation for the party before contesting elections.
