Luapula Province, Zambia – In a region where young people face numerous challenges, including limited access to quality education and economic opportunities, Youth Connect is making a significant impact. Led by CEO Kaira Wongani, this local organization is dedicated to empowering young people with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in life.

Youth Connect’s unique approach is driven by the energy and creativity of young people themselves. By tapping into the innovation and resilience of its target audience, the organization is able to design programs and initiatives that meet the real needs of young people. As Wongani notes, “Our organization has continued to make impactful strides in the lives of both the youth and communities within Luapula Province.” Wongani’s passion for youth empowerment is rooted in his own experiences, having advocated for his fellow learners on issues affecting them since his primary and secondary school days.

“My passion for youth empowerment stems from my school days, where I spoke up for fellow learners on issues affecting them. I’ve come to realize the power of amplifying young voices and addressing challenges they face. Today, I’m driven to create a world where young people are valued, respected, and empowered to become leaders and change-makers, equipped to tackle complex challenges and build a brighter future. I promote self-acceptance by sharing my experiences, providing a safe space for expression, and role-modeling authenticity.”

One of Youth Connect’s notable achievements is the implementation of the Youth Climate Action Project, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropy. This initiative has not only raised awareness about climate change but also empowered young people to take action and become climate leaders in their communities. Wongani highlights that the project has seen young people develop innovative solutions to address climate change.

“YCAF empowers young people to take action on climate change, equipping them with skills, knowledge, and confidence to drive positive change. We’re confident it will make a lasting impact and contribute to a more sustainable future. We’re committed to expanding our services and initiatives to address child abuse, and we look forward to collaborating with like-minded organizations and stakeholders to create a safer, more protective environment for all children.”

Wongani adds, “Empowering young people requires giving them autonomy to take ownership of their projects, providing guidance and support, and celebrating their successes. It’s about fostering a sense of purpose, belonging, and self-worth.”
The organization has also had the opportunity to participate in prestigious programs, including the Common Purpose Youth Organization training in South Africa. Wongani reflects on the experience, saying, “Our organization has participated in several prestigious programs, that include the Earthshot Prize and Common Purpose Youth Organization training in South Africa.” This experience has likely provided valuable learning opportunities and exposure to new ideas and perspectives.

Youth Connect’s partnerships with local and international organizations have been instrumental in its success. These collaborations have provided access to resources, expertise, and networks that have helped strengthen the organization’s programs and services. Wongani expresses gratitude for the support of partners and looks forward to continuing to work together to make a lasting impact in the lives of young people.

“We plan to expand our reach, develop new programs, and build partnerships to continue making a difference in young people’s lives. YouthConnect aims to empower young people to become leaders and change-makers, providing opportunities for skill development and advocating for policies that support youth empowerment.”

The organization’s work has had a profound impact on the community, empowering young people to become leaders and change-makers. Wongani says, “We’ve seen young people gain confidence, develop new skills, and become leaders in their communities. These are the moments that make all our hard work worthwhile.” With its innovative programs and commitment to youth empowerment, Youth Connect is making a significant difference in the lives of young people in Luapula Province.

As Wongani aptly puts it, “Our goal is to create a ripple effect of positive change that will be felt for generations to come. Supporting YouthConnect’s mission offers a unique opportunity to make a profound impact on young people’s lives, contributing to their empowerment and development.”
